Million Dollar Password, hosted by Regis Philbin, is a remake if CBS’s password that teams up contestants with celebrities to potentially win the million-dollar prize. Password was first aired on CBS in 1961 and was hosted by Allen Ludden. Password had a good run in which 1,555 telecasts were aired ending in 1967. There were a couple of revivals on NBC that aired in the decades following the ending of Password in the late sixties. In 2007, the idea of remaking Password stemmed from the inner ideas of Bob Stewart, Mark Goodson, and Bill Todman. Fremantle Media than carried the idea of bringing Password into the 21st Century with some big names and some big ideas. Regis Philbin brought a new age twist to the game and added clout for big name celebrities to become involved with the show. The show was renamed Million Dollar Password referring to the million dollar prize that could be won if the contestant and the celebrity guest successfully teamed up to identify the “million dollar password”. Million Dollar Password is played with two contestants and two celebrity guests for the first part of the show consisting of four rounds. This elimination section of the game will determine who is going to successfully continue on to the million dollar password round. There are four elimination rounds that each consist of a contestant teaming up with one of the celebrities. During an elimination round a contestant must try to identify the password that the celebrity has by correctly identifying it from the one-word clues that are given. Each contestant will have one of the celebrities as a partner for two rounds and then they will switch for the remaining two rounds. The contestant with the most amount of correctly guessed answers will move on to the Million Dollar Password Game. The Million Dollar Password has a 6 step prize latter consisting of intervals of winnings starting from correctly guessing 5 out of 10 words which correlates to a $10,000 prize, 5 out of 9 gets $25,000, 5 out of 8 gets $50,000, 5 out of 7 gets $100,000, 5 out of 6 gets $250,000, and a contestant who guesses 5 out of 5 in the allotted time gets the $1,000,000 grand prize. The contestant chooses whether they will give or receive the password in which partner in this round is the celebrity with whom they earned the most points with in the elimination round. For the contestant to work him or herself up the latter they must successfully identify 5 passwords in each 90-second interval. The clue giver can only give 3 clues for each word and passes are allowed. Once a contestant has successfully completed a step on the latter they can either choose the leave with their winnings or continue on and risk losing all of their money if they do not correctly guess the correct passwords. Million-dollar password has been tremendously successfully at its home on CBS. The big name celebrities, big money, and big stakes have gained a loyal following.
