Duel is a game show that debuted on ABC in December 2007 and began a 2nd season in April 2008. The show is hosted by sports talk show host Mike Greenberg. Duel is a quiz show that features players betting chips on answers to multiple choice questions. It is marketed as a hybrid between Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and The World Series of Poker. An episode of Duel begins with two players facing each other with two sets of 10 $5,000 chips each. The same multiple choice questions, each with four possible answers, are presented to both players and they each have the opportunity to cover as many answers as they choose. Once both players are satisfied with the choices each one covered; their choices are revealed along with the answer. If either Duel contestant didn’t cover the correct answer that particular match is over and the victorious player wins the chips of the losing player. If both answer correctly, the chips placed by all incorrect answers are removed and further questions are asked. All chips that are removed go into the pot for the eventual winner of that duel. Once one player runs out of chips the other is declared the winner. There are a couple of unique rules within Duel. Typically both players have an unlimited amount of time to answer their questions. Twice per round a player may impose a seven second time limit on that particular question. Strategically speaking, Duel contestants tend to exercise that option to rattle their opponents when they themselves are certain of the answer. Also, if both players in the duel should happen to not cover the correct answer or both of them run out of chips on the same question the game goes into a “shootout” round. In the shootout round each player is given four chips with no monetary value. One question is asked and the player elects how many choices they wish to cover, from one to four. When the answer is revealed if one player answered correctly and the other didn’t that player is declared the winner and gets to continue in the game but receives no money. If both players answer correctly, the one who covered less choices total is declared the winner. From there, the winning player gets to pick their next opponent from a list of three players with a small amount of biographical information given. As players progress in the game their winnings add up and if they should lose they get to keep what they won in prior duels. At the end of a run of Duel episodes the four biggest money winners are brought back to compete in a tournament for a large grand prize. The biggest money winner gets to choose his opponent while the other two contestants face each other. The two winners meet and all of the money from the semifinals and finals is given to the winner. Ashlee Register was the biggest Duel winner during the first run of shows as she ended up with a total of $1,720,000 making her the highest grossing female game show contestant of all time. Since Duel is a relatively new show it’s possible that the rules and format of the game will change.
