Family Feud is a game show that has been televised in the United States since 1976 and is currently hosted by John O’ Hurley. From the beginning of Family Feud until 1995 the show aired on ABC. Since 1999, when the show returned from a 4 year hiatus, it has aired in syndication. The premise of Family Feud is that two competing families of five answer questions that were asked of 100 survey respondents. Since the goal is to match the answers of others there are no correct answers, only answers that are most popular among those who answered the survey. A round begins with a member of each family buzzing into to give an answer to the first question. The person who buzzes in first with a correct answer has the option to play the category or pass it to the opponents. Once that is decided each member of the family gives an answer until all of the answers on the board are matched (usually 5-7 answers) or three incorrect guesses (or strikes) are given. For each correct answer on Family Feud, points in the amount of the number of those surveyed who gave that answer are awarded. If three strikes are achieved, the opposing team has the option of stealing the other team’s points by giving one guess to that category. If it’s correct they steal the points for that round; if incorrect the other team keeps their points. Once a team reaches 300 points they are declared the winners of the game and go on to the Family Feud “Fast Money” round. In that round two family members are picked to answer the same set of questions. One is initially kept in an isolation booth while the other family member gives an answer to each of 5 survey questions in 20 seconds. The number of points earned for each question on Family Feud is tallied and the second person is brought out to answer the same questions. This person is given 5 more seconds to avoid duplicate answers and at the end their score is added to the first score and prizes are awarded. If the score is greater than 200 the family wins $20,000. If it’s less, the family wins $5 for every point. The family that wins that day returns to Family Feud the next day for as long as they can keep winning. Family Feud has a remained a highly watched game show despite not having large prizes or much intellectual challenge. Family Feud is very easy to play at home to and is accessible to people of all ages. Family Feud also has been on television for many years and remains popular with those who grew up watching it. Family Feud has also remains a popular show to appear on despite a top prize of $20,000 that would be split 5 ways. It appeals to contestants for the same reason as Family Feud appeals to audiences; the chance for the average person to appear on television and compete with the rest of their family.
