Bob Barker is best known as the host of The Price is Right; having hosted the show from September 4, 1972 until deciding to retire in 2007. His final episode of The Price is Right aired on June 15, 2007. Barker has since retired, but his career is much more than the host of The Price is Right. Bob Barker was born in Washington and spent much of his early life on an Indian reservation. After serving in World War II as a Navy pilot, Barker began to embark on a career in radio that would eventually lead to his hosting The Price is Right. He was noticed and was offered the job hosting Truth or Consequences. The show began in 1956 and lasted until 1975. But in 1972 he began hosting The Price is Right and his career took off from there. The current host of The Price is Right, Drew Carey, doesn’t come from a game show background like Bob Barker and many other game show hosts do. Carey began his career in standup comedy in 1985, followed that up with an appearance on Star Search and had a guest spot on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Once he had a name for himself, other opportunities arose and he got his own show on ABC The Drew Carey Show. This (and other loose improv comedy shows) would prepare for the flexibility required to host a game show. In 2007 he got the opportunity to host the fledgling game show The Power of 10. After taping just the pilot of that show, the producers of The Price is Right contacted Carey for an audition. He landed the role and has received mixed reactions. Replacing a legend like Bob Barker on The Price is Right is tough, but Carey has shown great deference to the history of the show and has stated that he doesn’t want to try to emulate Bob Barker and would rather take the show in his own direction.
