The process for becoming a contestant on Wheel of Fortune begins with prospective candidates mailing in a postcard to the show’s Los Angeles offices. Wheel of Fortune usually looks for potential contestants in that area, but those who are traveling to Los Angeles can indicate when they’ll be in the area and if there are auditions being held they will be invited to attend. Once at the audition, 70 or so prospective players will play brief versions of the game getting a chance to spin the wheel, call out letters, and solve the puzzle. Because Wheel of Fortune has a skill component the show is looking for people who are naturally good at the game. However like all game shows, Wheel of Fortune is looking for potential contestants that make for good television. People who have interesting stories to tell, are relatable to the audience, and have a friendly and enthusiastic persona and are good at the game are those most likely to have a chance to go on Wheel of Fortune. But the importance of being good at solving puzzles can’t be understated because the producers of Wheel of Fortune also require all candidates for the show to take a 5 minute written quiz where they have to solve 16 puzzles in that time. After the written test, those who obviously wouldn’t be good candidates for the show are asked to leave and those remaining play more mock games and are further judged on their abilities and personalities. At that point, because of the popularity of the show, there is a long wait until those selected are contacted and told when they’ll be on the show. Many people are from Los Angeles, but some travel to be on the show at their own expense. Due to the widespread popularity of Wheel of Fortune it’s very difficult to get on the show, but obviously very rewarding.
