Becoming a contestant on Deal or No Deal requires individuals interested in appearing on the show to create a five minute videotape of themselves and their supporters as well as fill out an application and a recent photo and mail the entire package in. The tape is the most important part of the Deal or No Deal audition process as the show’s casting people are looking for energy and enthusiasm from the potential contestant as well as their friends and family. Deal or No Deal is also interested in casting family oriented people that can relate to the viewing audience. They want people that are unique and have an interesting story to tell about themselves but are somewhat like the show’s target demographic. Potential Deal or No Deal contestants are also expected to state what they would do with the show’s grand prize of $1,000,000 and again they are looking to cast people with unique answers that would make the contestant seem likable to viewers. Since Deal or No Deal is most interested in people that will take risks and make for an exciting game they are looking for people that seem a little crazy in a positive way. The application determines eligibility for the show and basically ensures that a potential contestant is of legal age, has never appeared on another NBC program, and doesn’t know anyone affiliated with the show or the production company. Deal or No Deal differs from a show like Jeopardy in that there is no merit based part of becoming contestant. Deal or No Deal has no right or wrong answers and there is no best way to play the game. So becoming a contestant is about appearing enthusiastic and presenting you and your family as people that would make for good television and remain likable to people watching.
